Transforming Wetlands and Enabling Farmers for
Sustainable Growth

Mithila Makhana Institute
At Mithila Makhana Institute, we are fostering sustainable agriculture in the wetlands of Madhesh Province, Nepal. We aim to empower local farmers, promote environmentally friendly practices on agriculture and turn aquatic ecosystems into productive spaces.
Our journey begins with Makhana (fox nuts), but we are just getting started. We are also working to grow other water-based crops like water chestnuts and lotus, creating more opportunities for farmers and expanding our product range.
Join us in promoting resilient livelihoods, enhancing wetland ecosystems and driving sustainable economic growth in Nepal.

What We Do: Growing Together with Farmers and Wetlands
Scaling Makhana Production and Expanding Aqua-Based Crops
Empowering Farmers with Tools and Resources
Building a Processing Hub for Value Addition
Strengthening Market Access and Value Chains
Mithila Makhana Institute is committed to increasing the production of Makhana, diversifying into other water-based crops and empowering farmers through comprehensive support. Our goal is to transform wetlands into sustainable agricultural hubs, fostering economic growth and creating lasting impact.
Why Aqua-Based Agriculture in Madhesh Province?
Madhesh Province is home to extensive wetlands, rivers, and waterlogged areas that provide ideal conditions for aqua-based farming. However, these natural resources are not being used to their full potential.
The Advantages of Aqua-Based Crops
1. Higher Returns: Crops like Makhana and lotus offer better income compared to traditional crops such as rice and wheat.
2. Efficient Land Use: Wetlands and waterlogged areas that are unsuitable for traditional farming can be used for high-value aqua-based agriculture.
3. Environmental Benefits: Aqua farming supports biodiversity and promotes sustainable wetland management.
4. Climate Resilience: These crops are naturally suited to withstand floods and droughts, providing a reliable source of income despite changing weather patterns.
